K&N 33-2189 High-Flow Replacement Air Filter is the drop-in element for the twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre 996. It fits the original airbox with no modification, and on a forced-induction engine the airflow a filter gives back is worth having.
Oiled cotton, the original high-flow media. K&N layers oiled cotton gauze between epoxy-coated aluminium mesh, rated to flow up to 50% more air than a disposable paper filter and tested in an ISO 5011 laboratory for filtration efficiency. Supplied pre-oiled; washed and re-oiled with a K&N Recharger kit, with up to 50,000 miles between cleanings under normal highway driving. Be sparing with the oil — an over-oiled element is how filter oil ends up on a mass airflow sensor, and that is an expensive lesson on this car.
